TO DONATE PLEASE EITHER VISIT SANCTUARY ANY DAY VISIT OUR NEW JUBILEE WEBSITE AT www.thornberry-animal-sanctuary.org.uk The abiding memories of 2012 will surely be Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee, the London Olympic games , the wettest August in 100 years and Thornberry’s own Olympian struggle to survive! And thanks to YOUR wonderful response to our appeals, SURVIVE WE HAVE! The proceeds from the sale of the farmhouse and a VAT refund have at last made it to our bank account, providing us with a breathing space in which to plan the long-term security and sustainability of the sanctuary. However, immediate challenges are ever present, and we are now in the process of making our stables independent of the farmhouse. This entails the separation of electricity and water supplies from the house, the demolition of outbuildings to provide a driveway and parking and the provision of toilet and office facilities for the staff. We have recently had to have a new boiler in the kennel black and the cattery roof needs to be replaced before winter. We are very grateful to have had voluntary help with other on-site projects, and thank everyone involved. The recession continues to be a major fact of life for our financial situation; many supporters struggle to afford to donate and our costs are forever rising . We are finding that more elderly animals are being relinquished, presumably because of the prohibitive cost of the veterinary care they need, and saddest of all is the ever increasing number of dogs and cats abandoned at our gates when their owner hasn’t the courage to bring them in. We are just thankful that we can ensure the pet is safe, loved and cared for until it finds its ‘forever home’. It is thanks solely to the dedication of our staff, who, until this month, have struggled on with reduced paid hours, and to YOUR generosity, that Thornberry is able to continue its vital work. OUR THORNBERRY FRIENDS ARE SO VITAL AT ALL TIMES YOU TOO CAN BECOME A FRIEND OF THORNBERRY, as always, FOR THE NEGLECTED WE CARE Each year the sanctuary takes in more than 500 abandoned or neglected animals, from dogs, cats, rabbits, budgies and ferrets to horses, pigs and goats. But the current economic climate has taken its toll, resulting in a decline in charitable donations, increased bills and more animals than ever finding their way to the Sanctuary as the ‘squeeze’ hits their owners. Sue McNeela, Chair of the Trustees, said: “Thornberry Animal Sanctuary is a small independent Sanctuary that has been rescuing and re-homing animals since 1988, Thornberry does NOT receive any funding other than what is raised by ourselves through the ingenuity and tireless efforts of our volunteers plus the many members of the public who donate, fundraise and remember us in their will. Over the last year or so we have noticed a sharp decline in donations and a steady increase in running costs, . In the last 12 weeks alone, we have taken in 70 dogs and 62 cats. Kitten season is also upon us. Thornberry is the only horse sanctuary in this area and it is this aspect of our operation that puts the greatest strain on our resources. Costing over £1000 per month in feed alone. With running costs of around £40,000 plus each month, the sanctuary is appealing for donations and volunteers to help boost its funds to ensure it can continue its good work. It has always been our aim to seek affiliation with local and national business in order to maintain a sustainable income and broaden our client base. Could YOUR business benefit from advertisements posted on our website, included in our news letter or displayed at our sanctuary. ? If you would like to make a donation, volunteer, adopt an animal or join in one of the many activities run by the Sanctuary each year, details can be found on: www.thornberry-animal-sanctuary.org.uk Our admin team daily update our FACEBOOK pages, Thornberry Animal Sanctuary Thornberry is a small independent sanctuary that has been taking care of abandoned and neglected animals in the South Yorkshire region since 1988.
